Sprint Showcases Innovative Public Safety Solutions at IACP
Conference in Denver, Oct. 3-7
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 2009--
Sprint (NYSE:S) continues to be the preferred company for police, fire
department and other emergency first responders when it comes to
accurate and reliable emergency communications. The company has
established its leadership position with Nextel Direct Connect, Dispatch
Operations and Interoperability Integration, new Sprint 4G Streaming
Video, and National Crime Information Center Lookup solutions.
“Sprint is the undisputed leader in this space and has been serving the
needs of first responders for more than a decade, including several
presidentially declared disasters and the tragic events of Sept. 11,”
said Stephanie Atkinson, Managing Partner at Compass Intelligence.
“Solutions like Nextel Direct Connect – running on a reliable
network – are critical to public safety operations since it
provides instant communication with just the push of a button,
especially with the off-network feature, which sometimes is the only
means of communication available during an emergency situation.”
This year’s International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)
conference, Oct. 3-7 in Denver, will attract thousands of police chiefs
and emergency preparedness professionals interested in learning about
new public safety solutions. Sprint’s portfolio of communications
solutions will be at the center of those discussions.
“As any official at the conference will tell you, no other carrier has
the presence Sprint has in local and federal law enforcement
jurisdictions, natural disasters, and wherever large public gatherings
occur,” said Dan Gillison, director of public safety solutions for
Sprint. “With our broad capabilities served by our dependable Now
Network, we have a rich history of partnering with the public safety
community for their communications needs. Our close relationship with
our public safety customers and understanding of their mission-critical
needs provides evidence of our constant innovation of customized
mobility solutions that are instant, reliable, secure and interoperable.”
Among the solutions most used by public safety officials:
-
Nextel
Direct Connect – The solution of choice for first
responder and emergency personnel. The ability to instantly connect,
collaborate and share information with one or many on the nation’s
fastest push-to-talk network.
-
Dispatch Operations and Interoperability-Integration (DO&I) –
Sprint’s iDEN network integrates directly into the heart of an
agency’s Land Mobile Radio systems for a true parallel dispatch
network system. This allows officials to communicate (interoperate)
across traditional agency, jurisdictional and geographic boundaries
and across disparate communication systems.
-
4G Streaming Video – Law enforcement officials are no longer
hampered by slow downloads with real-time streaming video powered by
Sprint 4G technology. For example, the Annapolis Police Department, a
current Sprint customer, is partnering with Sprint to create remote
monitoring solutions using Axis 214 PTZ cameras paired with Sprint’s
MBR1000 router and 3G/4G U300 mobile broadband card. The solution
enables law enforcement to remotely monitor locations and to capture
criminal evidence and share back to police headquarters, even as an
officer is being deployed. Sprint has launched 4G technology in six
markets and expects to have up to 120 million POPs (points of
presence) covering about 80 markets by the end of 2010.
-
NCIC Lookup – Instantaneous access of data from the National
Crime Information Center for mobile police officers.
Sprint’s public safety solutions and its Now Network have a history in
the Mile High City. During last summer’s Democratic National Convention
(DNC), Sprint enhanced its network to serve large demands at the Pepsi
Center, the Colorado Convention Center, Denver International Airport and
the Downtown Denver business and hotel district. Members of the Denver
Police Department also used Sprint BlackBerry and Nextel Direct Connect
push-to-talk devices to their advantage during the DNC.
“The Sprint devices, equipped with GPS and Wireless Priority Service,
helped us locate and deploy hundreds of police officers and prioritize
wireless calls during the convention,” said Dr. Tracie Kessee, division
chief. “Our relationship with Sprint is solid. We rely on more than
1,000 of their devices in our day-to-day activities.”
Each year, Sprint and America’s Most Wanted (AMW) team up to honor
all-star first responders – the law enforcement officers, firefighters,
EMTs and others who go beyond the call of duty to keep citizens out of
harm’s way. This year, Detective William Weigt, of the Peoria, Ariz.,
Police Department, was named the 2009
AMW All-Star winner. Furthermore, Sprint is a major player at the
annual National Police Week in Washington, D.C. At this year’s event,
Sprint sponsored the 14th Annual Law Ride on May 10 involving
800 motorcycle riders and was the title sponsor for the Third Annual
National Police Week 5K Race. The company also presented a $40,000 check
to the Concerns of Police Survivors organization at its annual
conference May 14 in Alexandria, Va.
Sprint, named most reliable 3G network in a 13-city test by PC World,
serves public safety customers through its newly formed Business Markets
Group (BMG). Composed of 4,000 sales, support, marketing and operations
employees, Sprint’s BMG is dedicated solely to enterprise, general
business and public sector customers. BMG delivers wireless, wireline
and converged solutions for companies, drawing on the nation’s most
dependable 3G mobile broadband network,* 4G capabilities that are well
ahead of Sprint’s competition, the fastest national push-to-talk
network,** and a comprehensive solutions portfolio of devices and
applications.
