Sprint Celebrates New York City’s Community Spirit with More Than $55,000 in Grants to Local Non-Profits

The Museum of the City of New York, Preston Center of Compassion, Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Suffolk, Songcatchers and Theatre for a New Audience receive Sprint Foundation grants; two local residents recognized for making a positive impact on the community

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), November 18, 2010 - Sprint (NYSE: S) has awarded five New York City-area non-profit organizations with Sprint Foundation grants as part of the 2010 Sprint Local Grant Program and the 2010 Sprint Community Champions program. The Sprint Local Grant Program annually awards two $25,000 Sprint Foundation grants to New York-area programs that support Sprint’s focus area of youth development. The Sprint Community Champions Program annually recognizes two outstanding New York-area residents who have made a positive impact on the community with Sprint Foundation grants to qualified non-profit organizations of the honorees’ choice. Grants were presented and Community Champions honored at a local reception last night.

The 2010 grant recipients and Community Champion honorees for New York are as follows:

  • The Museum of the City of New York was selected as a 2010 Sprint Local Grant Program recipient and will receive a $25,000 Sprint Foundation grant for its Weekend Family Programs. Through the Weekend Family Programs, the Museum of the City of New York offers a series of free Saturday-afternoon arts activities and live performances that benefit more than 2,500 children and their caregivers, including residents in homeless shelters. Hands-on workshops; live performances of music, theatre and dance; and cultural activities will make up the Sprint Foundation Family Performance Series.
  • Theatre for a New Audience was selected as a 2010 Sprint Local Grant Program recipient and will receive a $25,000 Sprint Foundation grant for its Arts in Education Program, which introduces students in the New York Public School system to Shakespeare and classic theatre. The program has a documented record of strengthening students’ reading, writing, speaking and critical-thinking skills and will reach 2,000 students in 15 schools this school year.
  • Hauppauge resident Joel Becker was selected as the 2010 Sprint Adult Community Champion, and the Sprint Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to his selected charitable organization, Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Suffolk (RSVP Suffolk). Becker is the volunteer coordinator and founder of The Community Computer Connections Program, a service project sponsored by RSVP Suffolk, which refurbishes donated computers and gives them to low-income families and individuals in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. His compassion and creativity in helping his community have been recognized by many.
  • Bronx resident Lauren Murphy was selected as the 2010 Sprint Youth Community Champion, and the Sprint Foundation awarded a total of $2,500 in grants to her two selected charitable organizations, Songcatchers, Inc. and Preston Center of Compassion. A student at Preston High School, Murphy has consistently and diligently demonstrated her dedication to others through service to her school and her community. Her many efforts include food drives for the hungry, fundraising for local and global causes, and volunteering with organizations like Big Sisters Little Sisters.
