It’s “not your father’s” prepaid phone: No contract plans from “the experts” have been helping consumers save money for years

Remember those, disposable prepaid phones? You could buy one, break it and just as easily throw it away. Not anymore.

In truth, the first “uncarriers” were the irreverent Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. They gave consumers who were fed up with “the big guys” a new option. Virgin introduced “Live Without a Plan” and “No Commitment” before 2006; Boost addressed the problems suffered by wireless consumers like extra charges for roaming, voicemail and long distance calling  back in 2009 aiming to “UnWrong” competitors’ shortcomings and their negative impact on customers.

While prepaid still offers a way for the value conscious or financially challenged to have a cellphone, today’s prepaid plans also offer a cost-saving alternative to a subscription contract carrier. Talk about “Blurred Lines.” Prepaid plans feature top-of-the-line devices, unlimited talk, text and data options, mobile hotspots, lower monthly fees and a host of other basic features without a contract. You pay for the device and service up front and get exactly what you pay for.

Sprint was hip to the value of prepaid when it acquired Virgin Mobile in 2009 and with Boost Mobile launched the Sprint Prepaid Group. Prepaid business continues to be an important part of Sprint growth. The brands are stalwart soldiers in the telecom battles, reflecting the same aggressive, competitive spirit that Sprint has taken on under CEO Marcelo Claure.

Last month, Virgin launched the first prepaid 4G LTE data share plan with Walmart, Virgin Mobile Data Share. It offers families the deepest array of sharing and control for up to four lines. It also allows parents to move amounts of data back and forth among siblings, grandparents and friends as well as set curfews for cellphone use. Virgin Mobile Data Share offers the ultimate flexibility for everyone’s crazy, changeable lives.

Then we went for the one-two punch; available now, Boost Mobile is upgrading the already great Data Boost plans with one of the industry’s lowest-priced prepaid monthly plan – the $35 Data Boost Up plan.
