Kansas City Royals Fans Pledge to Stop Driving Distracted

On any given weekday, while I’m driving to work, I see  a car moving especially slow in traffic, or pausing a bit too long at a light after it turns green.  Almost always, the driver is looking down at their mobile phone – either texting or using an app.  Distracted drivers seem to be everywhere.  A recent study from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute says text messaging increased the risk of a crash or near-crash by two times and resulted in drivers taking their eyes off the road for an average of 23 seconds total.  It’s up to each one of us to take responsibility and focus on driving when we’re behind the wheel.

Last week, in honor of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Sprint sponsored a fun-filled, informational ‘Focus on Driving Night’ at Kauffman Stadium with the Kansas City Royals to spread the message about safe driving. Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie appeared in a short public service announcement (PSA) encouraging fans to keep their focus on the road and not on their mobile phones. If you live in the Kansas City area, visit a local Sprint store to check out the PSA.

During the fifth inning, fans were encouraged to stand up and repeat the “no texting and driving” pledge that appeared on the scoreboard. Sprint gave away a Samsung Galaxy S6 to one of the lucky fans who stood up and took the pledge to not drive distracted. Here’s where you can take the pledge. 

Also during the game, Royals public address announcer Mike McCartney encouraged fans at the stadium to download the free Sprint Drive First mobile application. Sprint Drive First blocks all text messages and alerts when movement over 10mph is detected. The app directs all incoming calls to voicemail and incoming texts receive an automated customizable response. You can download the FREE app here.
