Sprint’s Kansas City network receives shared 1st place win in overall network performance
By Dr. John Saw, Chief Network Officer, Sprint
It wasn’t too long ago that John Legere tweeted “someday Sprint will make its hometown proud.” Well, we’re happy to say, today is that day.
According to a new RootScore® Report
by independent mobile analytics firm RootMetrics®, our network in Kansas City, Missouri (proudly called “home” by approximately 6,500 employees), is tied for #1 in overall performance, reliability and call performance, and is outright #1 in text performance.
On the data speeds front, Sprint’s median download speed increased by 62 percent since RootMetrics’ previous test just last October. As for call quality, Sprint did not record any blocked calls during testing. Zero!
Getting to #1
Our results in Kansas City and other markets like Austin
, Salt Lake City
, San Antonio
, St. Louis
are good examples of how we’re improving the network by fully utilizing all of our spectrum assets. Over the past six months in Kansas City our local engineers added hundreds of new 2.5GHz cell sites, and expanded our 1.9GHz and 800MHz LTE coverage. Teams then systematically optimized each cell site to maximize performance, coverage and capacity. In addition, our engineers worked hard to provide a better customer experience in public venues with new or upgraded wireless systems in places such as Kaufman Stadium (home to the American League champs, the Kansas City Royals!), Arrowhead Stadium, Sporting Park, and Sprint Center.
Nationwide we also see continued improvement with our network. In 111 of 125 markets to be measured in the first half of 2015, Sprint has been awarded a total of 156 first place (outright or shared) RootScore Awards for overall, reliability, speed, data, call, or text network performance.1
This is significant considering that for the first half of 2014 Sprint had achieved just 21 award wins in these same 111 markets.
You’ll see Sprint continue to get better every day in markets across the country as we increase coverage and capacity, densifying the network with the addition of more cell sites across all of our spectrum bands. We’ll also continue rolling out some of the most advanced technologies in wireless – carrier aggregation for higher speeds, 8T8R radios for enhanced coverage, and multi-antenna processing techniques like MIMO for higher capacity aimed at further unlocking the potential of our network.
Our network teams are driving hard to improve the experience for customers, and we’re encouraged by the results we’re seeing in Kansas City and other markets.
