Business Markets Group Makes Good on Vow to Give Business Customers More Value, More Productivity

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2009-- Sprint (NYSE:S) Business Markets Group (BMG) made strong contributions in the second quarter to the company’s continued financial stability and improved customer experience as it added new business and introduced new mobile products and services that deliver value and productivity to business customers.

In the second quarter, revenue attributed to business customers was more than $3.5 billion, generated across Sprint’s wireless and wireline networks.

Notably in the quarter, BMG extended its leadership in converged wireline and wireless services, winning a Global Telecom’s Innovation Award specific to how Sprint enables unified communications services.

Central to unified communications and other Sprint converged solutions is its Global IP network, which generated a 10% increase in Internet revenues over the second quarter of 2008, reflecting strong enterprise demand for Global MPLS. Internet revenues as a percent of its overall wireline revenue have increased from 33% in the second quarter of 2008 to 41% in the second quarter of 2009.

For its Internet solutions, Sprint has been recognized by the GSA as a “provider of choice.” The company also serves as a top 25 supplier for the federal government and its wireline business serves 93 percent of the Fortune 500 companies.

In the wireless arena, despite the continued impact of the recession, there were signs in the quarter that business sales are seeing some stabilization. Sprint is beginning to see positive activity in the enterprise customer market -- winning new contracts and cultivating existing customers for additional revenue, such as providing business branded mobility for Ford Motor Company’s Ford Work Solutions. Other wins of note in the second quarter include:

  • Methodist Healthcare (San Antonio, Texas) -- Sprint and GE Healthcare teamed up to provide the Texas hospital with innovative wireless infrastructure, software and services. The deployment supports Methodist Healthcare’s vision to enhance patient outcomes by enabling anywhere and anytime communication among caregivers.
  • Pinnacle AirlinesSprint will provide a comprehensive suite of integrated wireline and wireless solutions to Pinnacle -- one of the airline industry’s largest regional carriers -- that includes a wide range of converged voice and data services and more than 1,000 voice and data devices.
  • ValleyCrest Landscape Companies -- Sprint will provide the nation’s largest commercial landscaping company with GPS services to better track employee job location and company assets for these field branches. Sprint is the number one provider of GPS solutions, offering the largest portfolio of GPS-enabled solutions for enterprise, general business and consumers.

During the second quarter, BMG brought value to businesses in the form of award winning products and services, including:

  • Celebrating top honors with TeleNav at the 4th Annual CTIA Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards. The companies won first place for TeleNav Vehicle ManagerTM, available now exclusively from Sprint. Using GPS capabilities, TeleNav Vehicle Manager helps manage day-to-day fleet operations, reduce operating costs and simplify regulatory compliance.
  • Launching BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System (MVS) -- the next generation of Sprint Mobile Extension. BlackBerry MVS enables businesses to give users a converged desk phone and mobile device experience on BlackBerry® smartphones. Sprint is one of the first carriers in the world to bring BlackBerry MVS technology to market.
  • Launch the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 intelligent mobile hotspot, which allows users to connect to the Internet by bridging up to five WiFi-enabled devices like laptops, MP3 players and gaming devices to America’s most dependable 3G network.*
  • Launching the unprecedented Palm® PreTM -- broke sales records in its first weekend and continues to represent a winner among Sprint customers and industry observers.

“More than half of new Sprint subscribers are business users, and they have needs that are different from the consumer segment,” said Paget Alves, President – Business Markets Group. “Business and government users have the most to gain by embracing mobile data and by converging their wireless and wireline communications. Both of these areas are growing faster than the wireless market generally, and business customers are turning more often to Sprint for its expertise and unique applications in these areas.”

BMG will continue to build on its business leadership with an extensive portfolio of business products, services and applications. Get more information about these business offerings at
