Today marks the 44th Earth Day – the one day of the year dedicated to this planet we call home. Sure, one could argue that Arbor Day or World Water Day share similar significance, but let’s be honest: Earth Day is the one that everyone knows.
On an individual level, the day has taken on more importance during the past several years, especially as terms like climate change, recycling, and renewable energy have become more familiar. But it also has more significance for our company, as Sprint has enlisted more and more of our colleagues and customers on a path to a more sustainable future.
In celebration of Earth Day, we would like to provide an update on some of our most notable planet-friendly successes from the past year.
- Good Does Work: This past year our amazing Brand Team put forth a corporate responsibility platform called “Sprint Good Works.” The platform addresses people, product, and planet and how we communicate our efforts to bring people and resources together for a better world.
- Sprint Buyback: We continue to receive awards and accolades for this important program. Earlier this month we were honored by Compass Intelligence for the third year in a row as having the best buyback program among all other major U.S. carriers. Sprint Buyback was also recognized as the best recycling program at the PRNews CSR Awards just a few weeks ago. Through buyback and other wireless device recycling programs, we have collected more than 57 million devices to date.
- Federal Recognition: Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is recognizing Sprint with the WasteWise National Partner of the Year Award for Very Large Companies. This is due in-part to our efforts to divert more than 175 million pounds of electronic waste from landfills through the decommissioning of our nationwide iDEN network, known as Network Vision. You can read the full press release here.
- Other Top-Notch Accolades: In the past year, Sprint received Frost and Sullivan’s Green Excellence Award, as well as Supply Chain and Organizational Leadership Awards from the EPA. In addition to being recognized for our buyback program, PR News also just recognized us as the “best CSR corporation with more than 25,000 employees” and crowned Amy Hargroves, our Director of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability, as CSR Professional of Year.
