Tech Makeover Helps Michigan Small Business See the Light

Derryl Reed brightens up businesses while significantly reducing their operating expenses. 
Reed is owner of Energy Efficient Lighting (E.E.L.), of West Bloomfield, Mich., an energy efficiency consulting and project management firm that teams with noted LED providers to offer electrical audits and one-stop shopping for clients.  
Sprint recently awarded E.E.L. a free “technology makeover” in a contest it sponsored with the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce. Reed outlasted 35 other business entrants. With the 60-day makeover, Sprint Business sales reps and engineers will help Reed determine which wireless devices and applications can make E.E.L. the most profitable.  
“It’s a thrill to be selected for the tech makeover,” Reed said at a June 19 ceremony at the chamber headquarters in Detroit. “I look forward to working with Sprint and the Michigan Black Chamber. I’ve been a Sprint customer for quite a while because of its great offerings, competitive prices and customer service.”
Marjo Williams, an account rep in Livonia, Mich., is Reed’s go-to person on the makeover. She and Sprint solution engineers have begun talks with Reed on the specific solutions his company needs. Could feature-packed wireless tablets, Canvas Mobile Forms, or even fleet tracking devices be in E.E.L.’s future?
“That’s the fun and rewarding part of the process – seeing what Derryl needs to make his small business more competitive,” Williams said. “Sprint is making significant progress attracting more small- and mid-sized business accounts and I see why. It’s sink-or-swim for many small- and mid-businesses today. Sprint understands this better than others and we love the consultative role we play in these entrepreneurial relationships.”  
Reed, who started E.E.L. two years ago, is proud to cite his teaming with General Electric on lighting projects for a major hospital and airport in Ohio and Michigan. But he knows for his company to prosper, he must keep pace with technological trends, continue to network, and seize any improvement opportunity that comes his way.
“It can be hard to stay up on the latest technology and you can fall into a rut,” Reed said. “That’s why I’m ready to get started with the makeover. I’ll learn what’s new in wireless solutions and put that knowledge to work. Small business owners must run as lean as possible, operate efficiently, and provide exemplary customer service. I’m so happy to have Sprint on my team.”
Another bit of karma that could help the Sprint and E.E.L. collaboration is both companies champion sustainability and electricity conservation. Sprint aggressively reduces its electricity use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions yearly and implements significant renewable and alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and hydrogen. In fact, Sprint’s energy conservation efforts were recognized in the CDP S&P 500 Climate Change Report 2013, which tracks how America’s largest listed companies are responding to climate change.
