Sprint works with members of LAPD’s Police Activity League to bear flags during soccer tournament pre-game ceremonies
LOS ANGELES – June 2, 2016 – A total of 48 Los Angeles-area teens, ages 14-16, will have the unique opportunity to experience the historic 2016 Copa América Centenario games directly from the field. Sprint (NYSE: S), the official sponsor of Copa América Centenario has teamed up with the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Police Activity League (P.A.L.) from the Hollenbeck and Hollywood divisions, allowing members to represent the city as flagbearers during the pre-game ceremonies for the matches on June 4, 7, and 9 at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
“Sprint is proud to deliver this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to the teens involved in the LAPD’s P.A.L. program,” said Kevin Kunkel, president-Southern California at Sprint. “We are glad to share this experience with all soccer fans in Southern California, as we have many activities lined up to promote the 100th anniversary of this international tournament.”

The flag bearers’ responsibilities include leading the referees and players onto the pitch for the start of the match and to position the country flags for the playing of the national anthems of the competing teams.
All of the flag bearers and their chaperones will be provided tickets to watch the matches, meals and refreshments and uniforms.

The event takes place at The Rose in Pasadena from 7-11 pm on June 3 and 6-10 pm on June 6 & 8. The Police Activities League is a youth crime prevention program that relies on educational, athletic and other recreational activities to cement a bond between police officers and the youth in our community. It is based on the conviction that young people - if they are reached early enough -- can develop strong, positive attitudes towards police officers and the law. Studies have shown that if a young person respects a police officer on the ball field or in the gym, he or she will likely come to respect the laws that police officers enforce. Such respect is beneficial to the young person, the police officer, the neighborhood, and the business community.
The Police Activities League promotes trust and understanding between young people and police officers by bringing youth under the supervision and constructive influence of dedicated law enforcement professionals. The program also enhances public awareness about the role of police officers, including the reinforcement of responsible values and attitudes taught by parents.
