Summer is almost upon us – no I am not wishing away spring by any means, but definitely planning ahead and hopeful that this DC snow will come to an end. For a lot of you, the end of the school year benchmark might also come with the decision to buy your child his or her first mobile phone.

I am about to have three kids under age 3, and I can assure you that my 18 month old and 3 year old are well versed in the intricacies of a smartphone. And to think, Oregon Trail on MS-DOS kept me entertained until I was 10!

There’s no set age for when it’s the right time to purchase your kids’ first mobile phone – it’s different for every child and every family based on needs/priorities, and most of all responsibility (both parent and child).

Here are a few services from Sprint that may help ease your purchasing decision:
  • Sprint Mobile Controls: Clearly understand your child’s talk, text and app use habits. Lock your child’s phone on demand or schedule locks – during dinner, school or late at night. Browse your child’s contacts and apps downloaded to the phone. Sprint Mobile Controls costs $5 per month for up to four phones on your account. Sign up here for a 15 day free trial.
  • Sprint Drive First: Automatically locks your teenagers’ Android smartphone when they’re traveling more than 10 mph and unlocks when they stop driving. Direct incoming calls to voicemail and silence distracting alerts while driving. FREE in Google Play.
  • Sprint Family Locator: The ability to locate any phone on your Sprint family plan (both smartphones and feature phones). See your family members’ location in real time on an interactive map. Automatically check if your family members are where they should be and receive a text if they aren’t there. Sprint Family Locator costs $5 per month to locate up to four phones. Sign up here for a 15 day free trial.
Sprint provides a great wireless value, so adding a line to your plan user doesn’t have to break the bank. The Sprint Framily Plan offers group savings and isn’t limited to your traditional family. The more people added to the group, up to 10 phone lines, the greater the savings for everyone on the plan. Build a group of at least seven people and everyone gets unlimited talk, text and 1GB of data while on the Sprint network, for $25 per month per line (pricing excludes taxes and surcharges).

Music to my ears – I would much rather spend my money on traveling and clothes! Stay tuned for more exciting kid friendly news coming from Sprint soon.
