RESTON, Va. (3:45PM EDT) — 06/13/2006
Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) today announced that the company's Nationwide Sprint PCS Network and Global IP Network remained fully operational as Tropical Storm Alberto passed over Central and North Florida this morning. There were minimal service disruptions on the Nextel National Network in scattered locations in the Orlando and Tampa Bay metropolitan areas. These service impacts were resolved within hours after the tropical storm made landfall.
In addition, the company announced that it reopened a Sprint retail store in Crystal River, Fla. that was closed early yesterday as a precaution in advance of the storm's landfall.
"Tropical Storm Alberto offered Floridians a good reminder of the importance of being prepared when severe weather is forecasted," remarked Jeff Flom, Sprint Nextel's director of network field operations in the southeast region. "Our company prepares for hurricane season throughout the year by conducting After Action Reviews and emergency planning drills. Our preparations for Tropical Storm Alberto, which threatened to reach hurricane status, validated the disaster planning that our network team has done since the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane season."
Last month, the company announced it was investing approximately $100 million for hurricane preparations in storm-prone coastal communities across the South. This investment includes the installation of permanent generators for approximately 800 critical wireless cell sites and network facilities on the company's Global IP Network and wireless networks in Florida.
In addition, the investment funds the purchase of portable generators, SatCOWs (Satellite Cell on Wheels) and SatCOLTs (Satellite Cell on Light Trucks) which can be deployed as part of the company's disaster response and recovery.
