City of Chicago Selects Sprint to Provide Wireless Services for Its Government Entities

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 30, 2009-- The city of Chicago, which has benefitted from a decade of speed and reliability from Sprint’s Now Network, has signed a $12 million agreement with Sprint (NYSE:S) for five more years of wireless services.

The contract calls for Sprint to provide wireless services to all government departments for the nation’s third-largest city, including voice and data solutions, the new and rapidly expanding Sprint 4G technology, and a continuance of its industry-leading Nextel Direct Connect. Renewing the wireless services contract will help the government entities work even more efficiently while cutting costs.

Sprint, named Chicago’s most reliable 3G network in a 13-city test by PC World, has supported the city’s communications needs for more than a decade. In 2003, the Department of Buildings began using Xora GPS TimeTrack, running on GPS-enabled Nextel handsets. The application enabled supervisors to quickly and easily locate and manage field building inspectors, resulting in improved staff communications and better customer service.

Before deploying the Xora application, the city was already using Nextel Direct Connect for back office communications. Nextel Direct Connect has been the gold standard in push-to-talk for 20 years and remains the fastest national push-to-talk network. It’s the only national service featuring guaranteed call setup in less than a second – which means true instant communications.
