Sprint Nextel First to Install Comprehensive Underground Communication System Solution at Park University
University's education and commercial underground spaces now have Sprint wireless service on both the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network and Nextel National Network; enhanced mobility and communication amongst students, faculty and the Parkville community
Kansas City, MO — 08/21/2006
Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) and Park University today announced the launch of a comprehensive underground custom network in-building solution at the Parkville Campus in downtown Parkville, MO; a first of its kind in the area. Since communication within a college campus is key to being prepared during a crisis or emergency, this new initiative provides wireless access to students, faculty and staff using Sprint and Nextel handsets when they are located in the underground campus facility.
"Wireless communication provided by Sprint's Custom Network Solutions (CNS) team has changed the way we perform our day-to-day business in our unique underground commons area," said Beverley Byers-Pevitts, president, Park University. "This project provides mobility to our students and staff; increases our underground commons security and assures continuous connectivity for all Park Commercial Underground tenants who cannot afford to be out of touch with their constituents."
The underground facility at the university includes the academic section and the commercial section, which is leased out to local businesses. The academic section houses faculty and staff offices, classrooms and labs, a coffee shop, campus mailroom and a Barnes and Noble bookstore, frequented by students at all times. With the new in-building solution from Sprint, students, faculty, staff and tenants visiting the underground facility will have continuous access to their mobile phones and handheld devices. This continuous communication access to voice and data services also is critical during an emergency or catastrophe so that emergency responders can communicate more efficiently with above ground and below ground personnel.
"In an age of technology, people rely on their cellular phones to communicate on a regular basis. Park University is committed to enhancing its facilities in order to increase security and provide convenient means for communication," said Sara Freeman, CIO, Park University. "We are excited to partner with Sprint to bring the newest wireless broadband technology to our Parkville students, the local surrounding area, and the entire Park University community."
In addition, Sprint is also providing Mobile Broadband coverage operating on the Sprint Power Vision(SM) (EV-DO) Network at the Parkville Campus, enabling high speed wireless data applications for the students and the entire Parkville community. This service is instrumental in enhancing the learning experience at the university and giving students the tools for instant, simple and productive communication.
"Sprint has always been at the forefront of technology by offering solutions designed to address the needs of our customers," says Nancy Salisbury, vice president of public sector-midwest region, Sprint. "Our partnership with Park University strengthens our commitment to higher-education institutions by providing them with differentiated mobility solutions that provide secure, reliable and instant communications."
Sprint today has the most wireless broadband coverage of any carrier. The Sprint Power Vision(SM) (EV-DO) Network now covers more than 153 million people. Sprint plans to reach more than 200 million people in the U.S. with mobile broadband data services in 220 major metropolitan areas and 908 airports across the country with its Power Vision network by the end of 2006.
