Sprint Nextel 'Powers Up' Its Networks for the Final Four

Company boosts its wireless networks in and around the Georgia Dome

                   for the highly anticipated event

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 2007--For most fans attending the Final Four in Atlanta, wireless communications will serve a major role in enabling them to share the experience with others. This is why local Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) teams have been busy boosting the capacity and coverage of the company's wireless networks to accommodate the expected surge in usage by fans at the event.

"For both casual and die-hard basketball fans, the Final Four is something they're eager to see, enjoy and share," said Jeff Bennett, area vice president for Sprint. "Whether it's wireless calling, text messaging, photo-sharing or GPS applications, powerful networks make it all possible. Sprint's efforts to enhance its networks in and around the Georgia Dome will help ensure that the communications needs of our customers are fully met."

The following are some of the initiatives Sprint implemented on its Nationwide Sprint PCS Network(SM) or Nextel National Network(SM) to accommodate the expected increased wireless traffic at the event:

-- Permanent antenna system placed inside the Georgia Dome

-- Additional carriers placed on towers to provide coverage
during the Final Four and events throughout the year

Last year, Sprint invested more than $138 million in its wireless networks in metro Atlanta and added more than 3,400 cell sites across the country to strengthen wireless network performance. This year, the company expects to add 4,000 cell sites nationwide.

Increased Network Investment in 2007

Sprint spent more than $7 billion in capital expenditures in 2006, most of which was invested to enhance its wireless and wireline networks nationwide. Across the country, thousands of markets -- large and small -- received the benefit of this major investment. This year, Sprint will invest more than $7 billion to further enhance its powerful networks and expand mobile broadband coverage.

The Sprint Mobile Broadband Network and EVDO Rev. A

Sprint offers the largest wireless broadband network of any carrier through the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network, which reaches more than 209 million people across the country and covers more than 10,000 cities and 1,000 airports.

In many major cities, Sprint has upgraded the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network with higher-speed EV-DO (Evolution - Data Optimized) Revision A technology. Sprint's industry-leading EV-DO Rev. A coverage now reaches more than 124 million people and covers more than 5,300 cities and 450 airports. With EV-DO Rev. A, users should experience significantly faster average data upload speeds of 350 to 500 kbps (compared with 50-70 kbps on current EV-DO networks). Average download speeds should increase to 600 kbps to 1.4 mbps (from 400-700 kbps). By year end 2007, the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network is expected to be completely upgraded to the faster EV-DO Rev. A.
