Information Technology (IT) efforts facilitating wireless services development helped win Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) the #103 spot on the 2006 InformationWeek 500 roster of the most innovative users of business technology. The ranking, ahead of other national wireless competitors, fortifies Sprint Nextel's drive for leadership in delivering mobility solutions for consumers and businesses.

To be considered for the InformationWeek 500 list, a company must demonstrate a pattern of technological, procedural and organizational innovation. Sprint Nextel is innovating in applying Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in telecommunications. This revolutionary programming model uses a web-based open development platform to facilitate service creation and integration. SOA provides benefits for application developers in wireless service creation, leading to an enhanced customer experience.

"Our expertise in information technology is driving telecom product and service leadership, as this industry recognition demonstrates," said Dick LeFave, chief information officer, Sprint Nextel. "We want to differentiate Sprint Nextel by delivering a highly compelling mobility lifestyle for customers. Information technology is a strategic enabler for our business, as proven with the merger integration."

Within days of the merger announcement between Sprint and Nextel in December of 2004, IT teams from both companies took on the challenge of bringing together the wireless and long distance businesses while preparing for the local telephone business spin off. The merger was completed in a mere nine months with 45 million customers transitioned to the new company.

The top 2006 InformationWeek 500 companies were announced Sept. 11th at an awards ceremony in Rancho Mirage, Calif. For the past 18 years InformationWeek has identified and honored the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual listing. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.

"The InformationWeek 500 honors today's leading companies who set the benchmark for business technology strategies and projects," said InformationWeek publishing director, Fritz Nelson. "The companies on our list are some of the most innovative users of technology." Additional details on the InformationWeek 500 can be found at www.informationweek.com/iw500/.
