CHICAGO — 09/26/2006

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) today announced enhancements to its Nextel Network in the greater Chicago area. These extensive upgrades are the result of additional wireless cell sites and equipment being added to the Nextel Network, delivering additional coverage and network capacity to serve its customers.

"Sprint's network team is constantly looking for ways to improve the customer experience in Chicagoland and throughout the country," said J. W. Penland, area vice president for Sprint Nextel in Illinois and Wisconsin. "We strive to make our wireless service the best where our customers live, work, travel and play."

The following is a detailed list of the areas improved by these enhancements to the Nextel Network:

  • Lake Shore Drive at Jackson Park and Oak Street Beach
  • West side of Joliet
  • Interstate 94 at Townline Road
  • Downtown Arlington Heights
  • Downtown Aurora
  • Route 83 at Butterfield
  • Interstate 294 at Dondee Road
  • South side of Crystal Lake
  • Interstate 88 in Naperville
  • Downtown Somonauk
  • Pistakee Lake in McHenry

  • US 45 in Orland Park

Sprint plans to invest $7 billion in its wireless and wireline networks nationwide in 2006.

"Customers of Sprint's Nextel Network can expect more enhancements and expansions throughout 2006, reinforcing our commitment to constantly improve and enhance the customer experience," Penland said. "Our Nextel Walkie-Talkie services connect people coast-to-coast and country-to-country in less than one second."

The Nextel Network, one of the largest all-digital wireless networks in the United States, is based on the integrated digital enhanced network (iDEN) always-on technology, which provides the world's fastest and most efficient walkie-talkie service. More people use the Nextel Network for walkie-talkie calls than any other such service in the world. In 2005, the Nextel Network carried more than 100 billion direct connect calls.

Sprint Expands Its Power Vision(sm) Mobile Broadband Network
Sprint has the most wireless broadband coverage of any carrier. Sprint Mobile Broadband services, which run on the Sprint Power Vision Network, reach more than 157 million people in 220 major markets and 486 airports nationwide. Sprint plans to reach more than 200 million people by the end of 2006.

Sprint is rolling out an upgraded technology known as EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) Revision A during the fourth quarter 2006. By third quarter 2007, the Sprint Power Vision Network is expected to be completely upgraded to the faster EV-DO Revision A, which will enable customers to experience faster average download and upload speeds, thereby enabling richer applications and faster services in such areas as video, music, large file uploads and high- performance push-to-talk capabilities.
