Sprint 'Powers Up' Wireless Coverage, Capacity to Its Nextel Network in Florence

Significant Nextel Network enhancements as part of a $7 billion wireless and wireline investment nationwide

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) today announced enhancements to its Nextel Network in the Florence area. These extensive upgrades are the result of additional wireless cell sites and equipment being added to the Nextel Network, delivering additional coverage and network capacity to serve its customers.

"The Sprint network team is constantly looking for ways to improve the customer experience in Florence and throughout the country," said Craven Shumaker, area vice president. "We strive to make our wireless service the best where our customers live, work and travel."

The following is a detailed list of the areas improved by these enhancements to the Nextel Network:

  • Poplar Springs Road to Highway 21
  • Society Hill area
  • Wilkesboro area along State Route 268
  • State Route 268 from JA Russell Drive to White Plains Road
  • Rutherfordton along US 221
  • Rembert near the intersection of State Highway 521 and Wright Road
  • Orangeburg near the intersection of Stacey Bridge Road and US 178
  • Charleston along State Route 303 and Route 15

Sprint plans to invest $7 billion in its wireless and wireline networks nationwide in 2006.

"Customers of the Nextel Network can expect more enhancements and expansions throughout 2006, reinforcing our commitment to constantly improve and enhance the customer experience," Shumaker said. "Our Nextel Walkie-Talkie services connect people coast-to-coast and country-to-country in under one second."

The Nextel Network, one of the largest all-digital wireless networks in the United States, is based on the integrated digital enhanced network (iDEN) always-on technology, which provides the world's fastest and most efficient walkie-talkie service. More people use the Nextel Network for walkie-talkie calls than any other such service in the world. In 2005, the Nextel Network carried more than 100 billion direct connect calls.
