Sprint 'Powers Up' Wireless Coverage, Capacity to Its Nextel Network in Greater Boston

Significant Nextel Network enhancements made in Greater Boston as part of a $7 billion wireless and wireline investment nationwide

Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) today announced enhancements to its Nextel Network in the Greater Boston area. These extensive upgrades are the result of additional wireless cell sites and equipment being added to the Nextel Network, delivering additional coverage and network capacity to serve its customers.

The following is a detailed list of the areas improved by these enhancements to the Nextel Network:


  • Columbia Road & Warren Street in the Grove Hall area
  • Franklin Park
  • Talbot & Dorchester avenues in Dorchester
  • Hull: from Atlantic Avenue out to Main Street

Suburban Boston

  • Area around the intersection of Route 60 and Route 38 in Medford
  • On Route 40 and the surrounding area in Westford
  • Around Route 110 and the Lowell Connector around Lowell
  • Route 213 in Methuen
  • Route 128 in Danvers & Beverly
  • In the area around the Burlington Mall
  • I93 and River Road in Andover
  • Route 28 and Route 125 in Andover
  • Route 28 in Milton Center
  • Route 1a East Boston

Sprint plans to invest $7 billion in its wireless and wireline networks nationwide in 2006.

"Customers of Sprint's Nextel Network can expect more enhancements and expansions throughout 2006, reinforcing our commitment to constantly improve and enhance the customer experience," Diefenbach said. "Our Nextel Walkie-Talkie services connect people coast-to-coast and country-to-country in under one second."

The Nextel Network, one of the largest all-digital wireless networks in the United States, is based on the integrated digital enhanced network (iDEN) always-on technology, which provides the world's fastest and most efficient walkie-talkie service. More people use the Nextel Network for walkie-talkie calls than any other such service in the world. In 2005, the Nextel Network carried more than 100 billion direct connect calls.

Sprint Expands Its Power Vision(sm) Mobile Broadband Network
Sprint has the most wireless broadband coverage of any carrier. Sprint Mobile Broadband services, which run on the Sprint Power Vision Network, reach more than 157 million people in 216 major markets and 486 airports nationwide. Sprint plans to reach more than 200 million people by the end of 2006.

Sprint is rolling out an upgraded technology known as EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) Revision A during the fourth quarter 2006. By third quarter 2007, Sprint's Power Visionsm Network is expected to be completely upgraded to the faster EV-DO Revision A, which will enable customers to experience faster average download and upload speeds, thereby enabling richer applications and faster services in such areas as video, music, large file uploads and high- performance push-to-talk capabilities.
