M2M solutions sales, expanding 4G product line for business and
third-party endorsements mark strong second quarter
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), August 03, 2010 -
Sprint’s (NYSE:S) Business Markets Group (BMG) continued to make a
strong contribution to the company’s quarterly performance, finishing
the second quarter with strong sales of machine-to-machine (M2M)
solutions, an increased demand for Sprint 4G phones by businesses, and
an increasing number of third-party endorsements that validate the
unit’s continued momentum.
Contract wins. In the quarter, BMG continued to win new and
renew contracts for 4G, global IP, converged and M2M services. Notable
in the quarter were sales of M2M solutions that connect business
devices as diverse as utility meters, signboards, cameras, remote
sensors, laptops and appliances. Among the M2M sales in the quarter:
Amtrak – wireless digital signage on East and West Coast lines
allow passengers to access news/weather updates and feature film.
Continental Airlines – wireless digital signage tools at Houston
and Newark airports enable customers and employees to navigate
arrivals and departures at gates, terminal ramps and maintenance
Washington Redskins – wireless displays throughout the Club Level
at FedEx Field are powered by Sprint’s network.
4G availability. Business customers continue to benefit from
Sprint's rapid deployment of the first commercially available 4G
service from a national carrier in the United States. In the quarter,
Sprint launched 4G service in eight new markets including Kansas City.
Sprint 4G is now available in more than 45 markets serving
approximately 51 million people. As previously announced by Clearwire
Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR), coverage is expected to reach up to 120 million
people by the end of 2010 including deployments in Boston, New York,
San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Expanded product line. Strong demand by businesses for Sprint
smartphones like HTC
EVO™ 4G and BlackBerry® Curve™ and Blackberry Bold™
contributed to Sprint’s positive net postpaid subscriber growth of
136,000 on the CDMA network. In the quarter, Sprint also announced the
upcoming availability of the Samsung Epic™ 4G – a handset
designed to deliver a superior multimedia experience that will benefit
business users in several vertical industries including healthcare,
education, public safety, construction and professional services.
Sprint also added the 3G/4G USB 250U from Sierra Wireless – a device
targeting construction, government, healthcare and transportation
verticals with a superior mobile Internet experience beyond the office.
Third-party endorsements. Sprint continued to win third-party
endorsements in the business space for innovation and improved
customer experience. Everything Channel ranked Sprint No. 1 in the
telecom category and No. 3 – out of 500 across all industry sectors –
on its annual list of North America’s top technology integrators. The
J.D. Power & Associates Wireless Business Satisfaction Survey
recognized Sprint as the only carrier to see its scores improve in the
small/mid-size business category in each of the 2008, 2009 and 2010
surveys. Also, in the quarter, Sprint received the Gartner and 1to1
Media CRM Excellence Award as one of five gold-medal winners as an
organization that uses customer-focused strategies to improve its
Financial stability. Finally, the company's financial strength
continued to elicit confidence from business customers as Sprint
reported generating $709 million of Free Cash Flow in the quarter and
maintained a strong liquidity position with approximately $4.3 billion
in cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter after retiring
all 2010 note maturities of $750 million in the quarter. Year to date,
the company has generated $1.2 billion in Free Cash Flow.
