Sprint Adds Texas Store to Roster of LEED-Certified Locations
Harker Heights, Texas retail store achieves LEED® Silver Certification
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Oct. 5, 2010 – Sprint Nextel [NYSE: S] announced that a new Harker Heights, Texas retail store achieved LEED® Silver certification in August. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is the fourth in the company’s history and the highest LEED rating a Sprint facility has received to date.
“As part of ongoing efforts to meet Sprint’s environmental goals, we continue to examine opportunities to reduce our environmental footprint across business units – including greening our facilities,” said Rob Bryant, Sprint vice president, Sales Operations. “This LEED Silver certification demonstrates Sprint’s ongoing dedication to incorporating sustainability across the business. We are proud of this achievement and look forward to making continued progress to green our facilities.”
Central to the Silver certification, the new Sprint store’s design involves many steps to reduce its carbon footprint, improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. To help conserve water resources, the store includes such features as low-flow devices and automatic controls on faucets and toilets, which will help the store save more than 4,000 gallons of water annually and decrease overall water usage by 37 percent. The Harker Heights store is also a smoke-free environment that features carbon-dioxide monitoring and low-VOC-emitting (Volatile Organic Compounds) building materials, in an effort to greatly enhance indoor air quality. The store also uses environmentally friendly cleaning products and includes in-store recycling for employees. More than 70 percent of store equipment meets Energy Star™ standards.
Sprint’s Harker Heights retail location joins a host of other Sprint stores that incorporate sustainability practices into everyday business operations.
  • In March 2009, a Sprint store in Yerba Buena, Calif., became the first telecommunications retail store to receive a Certified Level certification in the USBGC “LEED for Retail” pilot program.
  • In 2005 and 2010, two Sprint World Headquarters buildings in Overland Park, Kan. were awarded LEED Certified Level certifications.
  • Three other Sprint locations in Texas incorporate significant green design features, including recycled building material content, water- and energy-efficient design elements, and more.
The successful LEED application process involved Sprint partners CB Richard Ellis, Rees Masilionis Turley Architects and Henderson Engineers.
LEED certifications are administered by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and are widely recognized as the leading status a building can achieve for incorporating environmentally friendly building design and construction elements.
Sprint’s industry-leading sustainability practices, programs, and products continue to receive recognition. In 2009, Sprint ranked highest among all U.S. telecom companies and #15 overall on Newsweek’s Green Rankings.  Sprint also scored highest among U.S. based wireless companies on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) 2009 Global 500 Report
Sprint was also recently honored with the “Sustainability Leadership Award” at the International Electronics Recycling Conference and Expo (IERCE) for its leadership among wireless carriers in the recycling of mobile handsets.
