I received an email with a warning about the wireless "do not call" list? What is this?

An email has been circulating warning individuals to get listed on the "Do Not Call" list in order to avoid having their wireless number released to telemarketers. This is incorrect and has generated a great deal of misunderstanding. Sprint does not and will not release customer information for use by telemarketers.

Here is a link to the FTC’s web site explaining that this is a hoax: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/04/dnc.htm

The "Do Not Call List" is the same national DNC list that has existed for wireline numbers for several years and is administered by the Federal Trade Commission. It is possible to add a wireless number to the national DNC registry. Although carriers do not and will not give wireless phone numbers to telemarketers, there are other ways for telemarketers to get wireless numbers (for example, from written information on sweepstakes entry forms).
